The Hostage And The Rabbi

Remembering Shabbat

“More than Jews have keep Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews.” – Ahad Ha’am (1856-1927)

Sasha Trufanov suffered 500+ days of captivity in the torture tunnels of Hamas. After his release, Sasha visited the great Rabbi Yitzchok Zilberstein, who had been praying fervently for him throughout his ordeal and supporting Sasha’s anguished mother, Yelena. The Rav told Sasha that he will forever be a symbol of the strength of the Jewish people. The formerly secular Sasha thanked God for his freedom and agreed to begin following the fourth commandment: Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
