A co-wife’s testimony cannot free a widow to remarry, and this causes difficult situations, especially if the husband was a priest. Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon disagree in a case where a man betrothed one of five women, doesn’t remember which, and all claim they were the one. A woman is believed as a single witness that her husband died, in order to free her to remarry, but not with respect to the deaths of other people, including her in-laws or children, God forbid. Can we assume that a woman would rather be married than not married? Not necessarily.
