Chapter 3, Mishna 9 When a festival day falls just before or just after Shabbos, Rabbi Eliezer says we may establish two separate eruv techumins (boundaries for walking distance) in advance, for walking in two different directions, one for the first day and one for the second. The rabbis who dispute Rabbi Eliezer say no, just as we can’t establish two different eruvs for Shabbos morning and Shabbos afternoon, we can’t do so for this continuous period of sanctity which encompasses Shabbos and Yom Tov (Festival). Proofs are brought for both sides of the argument, but in the end Rabbi Eliezer receives support from Four Elders and Rav, and the law accords with R’ Eliezer.
