Opening Chapter 10. One who stores seeds renders them significant even if less than the minimum measure for liability for carrying on Shabbos. If he carries and returns without using them, he shows that they’re not significant, but if he simply forgets, they remain significant. I believe our Sages are teaching us to avoid sloppy living, carelessly initiating actions that we forget and which may return to haunt us with consequences. Is this to say that a person’s intent trumps objective standards? No. The Sages apply a reasonableness standard to intent. Another lesson arises from mixing measures for different bodies of law, and from this we learn not to hijack a discussion just because we’ve heard a trigger word. Finally partial trasnfers to a karmelit or a basket that is half in one domain and half in another.
